Derek Ramsay, My Candidate

My Candidate

My Candidate, the Movie

My Candidate, the Movie

Derek, Iza & Shaina give the election season a romantic twist in “My Candidate”

Now, that the election fever has died down. The Filipinos have voted, and lucky candidates have emerged the winners. I think it’s time to get that much needed break and watch a movie. If you have unfriended your favorite movie buddy during the campaign period, well, pick from your loyal friends. *wink*

Showbiz hunk Derek Ramsay, Iza Calzado and Shaina Magdayao give us a different tale of love and romance this election season via “My Candidate” from Quantum Films, MJM Productions, Tuko Film Productions at Butchi Boy Films, producers of the award-winning and critically-acclaimed romantic-comedy films, “English Only, Please” and “#Walang Forever.”

The film is set against a political background and so, it is timely as today’s headlines.

Derek plays Congressman Sonny Suarez, now seeking a Senate seat. He may be a perfect candidate but is painfully shy and a bit withdrawn.

Iza, meanwhile, is Vera Sanchez, Sonny’s erstwhile girlfriend and archrival in his senatorial bid.

She possesses strengths lacking in Sonny.  She's charming as well as engaging but is not able to relate to people from the grassroots.

Shaina is Billie Pono, a life coach and communications trainer.  Sonny’s campaign team hires her services to help polish their candidate’s public speaking skill and innate charisma.

Billie succeeds at turning Sonny into the dream candidate and the two become close while at work.

In turn, Sonny is able to unleash some unresolved issues  in Billie’s life, including her insecurities thereby making her a better version of herself.

The movie’s teaser immediately earned almost a million views, shares and likes the minute it was posted on the “MC” Facebook page.

Netizens swore by Derek, Iza and Shaina’s outstanding performances.

Shaina held her own against Iza in the film, and this may be considered as her biggest break as a lead actress.

Shaina definitely gave the role her all, especially in scenes where her character finds herself slowly falling in love with Sonny.

Take note, Derek and Shaina also register very strong positive vibes on screen. Their romantic scenes together are neither hard sell nor put on, so, their pairing is indeed one of today’s freshest, newest romantic-comedy tandem.

No wonder, Direk Quark Henares is satisfied with his three main stars plus the support cast composed of Al Tantay, Nico Antonio, Ketchup Eusebio, Ricci Chan, Jun Sabayton and Tirso Cruz III in a special role.

The movie imparts all these funny situations during election time coupled with the resounding message that it must indeed be: “Bayan Muna Bago Puso.”

Also part of the movie is box-office director Dan Villegas, who serves as Creative Producer.

Direk Dan is the genius behind such award-winning and blockbuster films as “English Only, Please” and “#Walang Forever.”

His latest hit project is “Always Be My ‘Maybe.'”

Fresh concept. Hilarious story telling. New screen combination.

“My Candidate” gives the election season a romantic twist starting May 11 in theaters nationwide.

Cinemalaya’s “Boses” Needs to be Heard

“Boses” is the story of a boy made mute due to unbearable circumstances, and the friendship he forges when he learns to play the violin under a reclusive mentor who is also dealing with personal issues.

Starring seasoned thespians Cherry Pie Picache, Ricky Davao, and Meryll Soriano, and first-time actors Coke Bolipata and Julian Duque, “Boses” has been shown in at least nine countries around the world, and over 50 schools and communities in Metro Manila and Philippine provinces, since its big debut at the 4th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. “Boses” makes its way to SM Cinemas on July 31.

Among the places abroad where “Boses” has competed and been exhibited include: New York Los Angeles, Boston, Yale University, Oregon, Chicago, Hawaii, Vancouver, India, Korea, Hong Kong, Geneva, Zurich, Madrid and University of Alberta. In the country, “Boses” has toured schools, communities and parishes in partnership with various organizations such as the University of the Philippines, Assumption College, Ateneo de Naga, Holy Infant Jesus, Philippine High School for the Arts, De La Salle University, College of St. Benilde, Don Bosco, Centro Escolar University, Lourdes School, the Technological University of the Philipines, Earist, Claret School, several schools in Tacloban, Baguio, and Pangasinan, and communities in Tondo and Bagong Silang. It has also been screened in government offices, the Department of Justice, the National Economic and Development Authority, Aksyon Para sa Kapayapaan, Humein Ecology, Pasay Children’s Network, Couples for Christ and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Just this year, “Boses” was shown to a crowd of about 1,500 students at Sienna College at a screening organized by the Couples for Christ, and almost 2,000 viewers in Iloilo at back-t0-back previews organized by the University of the Philippines Iloilo Humanities Division and CBCP Youth Commission. The film was well received by student leaders in Samar, the Filipino employees of the United Nations in Vienna, and also by the cineastes in London when it was shown at the UK’s historic Riverside Theater.

Directed by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil and written by Froilan Medina and Rody Vera, “Boses” also has the distinction of being one of seven Filipino movies especially selected for a series of screenings by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The esteemed list includes Mike de Leon’s “Bayaning Third World,” Lino Brocka’s “Tinimbang Ka Nguni’t Kulang,” Eddie Romero’s “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” Brillante Mendoza’s “Lola,” and Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Kubrador.”

With audience attendance ranging from hundreds to as much as 2,000 per screening, the production team estimates that about 100,000 people have seen “Boses.” The clamor for screenings is continuous, and this early, block screenings organized by interested parties have been booked at SM Cinemas for July 31 onwards.

After touring Iloilo last July 5 and 6, the cast and director head off for Davao this coming July 10-12 for a child protection forum with military personnel who are also set to watch the film when it opens in SM Davao on July 31. “For me, this movie is really one of the most important films done in this generation,” Ricky Davao says to explain the movie’s enormous appeal. “It tackles forgiveness, social issues, healing and the chance to change for the better.”

Director Ellen Marfil declares, “The response and the groundswell of support has been really amazing… Our project is certainly one that is able to forge ties between organizations and peoples.”

Nuffnang & Hapee – Making a Difference in the World

Nuffnang is the first and now the leading blog advertising community. Right now, the company is operating in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia, and on their list are brands such as Citibank, Nokia, Sony, Proctor & Gambl, Nokia, Nike, Nestle.

Hapee, on the other hand, is the first Filipino owned company and a pioneer in producing multi-flavored toothpaste for children. And I heard that they employ persons with disabilities.

Both companies are competing with leading brands by giving world-class products and services. Ain’t that cool?

Now, Nuffnang and Hapee have partnered to give you an awesome movie screening today, June 3rd at 7:30pm at Greenbelt 3 Cinema 2!

To see this movie screening, you need to win special tickets, though. 😀

Bringing Water Nature at Home

In recent years, homes have been embracing Zen interior design. Incorporating Zen in your interiors frees up your home from clutter and achieves a calm, clear, and pure atmosphere. And it can really be relaxing.

That is what I’m planning to do with the interiors of my house soon. I want it to become a haven where I can relax after a long day’s work. As I was researching, I found out that these are some of the things that I need to achieve that Zen.

  • pebbles
  • a piece of driftwood
  • a flower
  • a picture of a waterfall
  • a seascape

I always find water to be relaxing and refreshing like most of you, I’m sure. 😉 And good thing, I can get fountains and set them up at home, and not just pictures of a waterfall. I am pleasantly surprised that there are even ready-to-install water walls, and an assortment of water fountain designs that I can choose from. Or I can also get wall fountain showcase which already include pebbles and sycamore springs.

I have also seen other homes with outdoor fountains, and they also achieve the same effect. It gives your whole house that close-to-nature effect.

I’m excited already to get on with this project actually. 😉
