Experience Magical Ice Festival at the Big Dome

It’s Christmas time, and there is already excitement in the air. Family and kids have been awaiting the return of the all-time Filipino favorite show, the Disney On Ice at the Big Dome.

There is much to look forward to in this year’s show. Aside from world-class skaters who make up its talented ensemble, Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival will be featuring Disney’s Academy Award® winning and number one animated feature film of all time, Frozen. This and the other three Disney royal adventures!

Disney on Ice - Elsa and Anna, Frozen

“This year’s Disney On Ice is truly magical with Disney properties that are packed with heart and personality. We have princesses that are exuberant and strong-willed, but we’ve also expanded the roles of spirited supporting characters, so that they’re more prominent in the show,” says Producer Nicole Feld.

For the first time on ice, watch your favorite Disney stars Anna and Elsa, together with hilarious snowman Olaf, rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in a magical winter adventure.

“The most exciting part of bringing characters like Anna and Elsa to the ice for the first time is knowing that they have a powerful and inspiring message that resonates with audiences as the sisters discover the true meaning of love,” says producer Nicole Feld.

Audiences will also enjoy comical segments with captivating stories of princesses Ariel, Rapunzel and Belle in a new twist of fairy-tale fun featuring Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Tangled, and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney on Ice - Rapunzel, Tangled

“By pulling together moments from classic Disney stories to the newest feature film sensation Frozen and combining them with elements of comedy and music, we developed a truly unique way to re-tell each fairy tale,” says Producer Juliette Feld.

Disney's Donald Duck, Fabs, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse

Dazzling costume designs, spectacular set elements, and jaw-dropping stunts are also what make this year’s show even more exhilarating.

In Beauty and the Beast’s “Be Our Guest,” the theatrical elements of the glitzy napkins and silverware costumes will astound audiences. “The costumes are designed to emphasize the overwhelming amount of table décor that appears in the movie. The napkins unfold to increase their size and the forks tower over the heads of the performers. This is a big moment for Belle; the costumes need to reflect that,” says Costume Designer Cynthia Nordstrom.

Moreover, lighting plays a crucial role in giving the overall production a truly magical feel.
“The colors really pull you into the different worlds of the princesses, but it’s how the lights are arranged that command your attention when the characters are performing their acts. For example, when the Daughters of Triton are introduced, the lighting individually highlights each of them. Your eyes follow the spotlights,” says Lighting Designer Sam Doty.

Experience Magical Ice Festival at the Big Dome from December 25 to January 3 and don’t miss the chance to see your favorite Disney stars LIVE!

Slow Food Summit at WOFEX 2015

What do you remember our parents telling us about eating? Chew your food to avoid indigestion.

These days however, indigestion may come not only in not chewing properly our food but it can also come from eating at fast-food joints or eating hurriedly  because you are off to a meeting somewhere.

Few people know that there are far more benefits from slowing down, and carefully preparing your food and enjoying eating it. A  group of people are actually advocating this. This group says “no” to fast food and fast life, rather they are pushing for glocal (global-local), which support sustainable farming to make sure that you have good and clean food on your table.

Get to know more about Slow Food and the group behind at the World Food Expo (WOFEX) 2015 from August 5 to 8 at the SMX Convention Center and World Trade Center in Pasay City.  There is a Slow Food Summit  on August 7, Friday, at Function Room 2 of SMX Convention Center.

What to expect at Slow Food Summit?

  • The Ark of Taste exhibit, a showcase of some endangered Filipino food. The Philippine list has 32 products listed such as the adlai cereal, barako coffee bean, batuan, criollo cacao, kadios, kamias, some different heritage rice varieties, luyang dilaw to name a few.
  • Pop-up food tasting booths by Down to Earth (free-range meats and chicken), Fresh Start Organic from Negros Occidental, Cordillera Network (heritage rice), Cara Milk Dairy ice cream, Theo and Philo chocolates, Pamora Farm (free-range chicken and eggs), Malipayon Farms, Meliomar (sustainable fish), and ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle.
  • A lot of sharing through educational sessions on interconnectedness and influences of food together: the plate, planet, people, politics and culture. Network and learn from participating chefs Robby Goco of  Green Pastures, Margarita Fores of Lusso and Cibo, Claude Tayag of Bale Dutung in Pampanga, Jam Melchor of Healthy Eats food delivery service, and Chele Gonzales of ArroZeria and Vask.

Grand, Glittery, and Gold at Marriott Manila

Marriott Manila Hotel was transformed into a glitzy space last February 10. It was a night of all things shining, shimmering, splendid as Marriott Hotel Manila’s associates – aptly called Brilliant Hosts – celebrated their Annual Party at the Manila Ballroom. With the theme “Grand, Glittery, and Gold,” the hosts were in their best regalia as the men were dapper in their suits and tuxedos, while the ladies strutted their stuff in their beautiful flowing gowns.

All of the hotel’s departments were divided into groups and were tasked to create a video presentation based on an era assigned to them, from the roaring 50’s to the modern 2000’s, whilst still staying true to the night’s theme. The Sales & Marketing and Engineering team defended their title and emerged as the champion for the 2nd straight year with their rock-and-roll inspired 80’s music video, while the F&B Kitchen team won 2nd place with their throwback 90’s entry and the Housekeeping and Laundry team bagged 3rd place with their flashback 50’s short film.

Fritz Andal of the Engineering Department and Joanna Tiglao of the F&B Kitchen Department emerged as the Best Male and Female Performers respectively, while Cholo Martillo and Jane Manzanero, both from the Sales and Marketing Department, won as Male and Female Stars of the Night.

The video presentations as well as the individual winners were chosen by Mr. Ronan Capinding, Mr. Roly Halagao, and Mr. Paul Daza.

Marriott’s philosophy of “putting people first” resonates in the manner that the Brilliant Hosts provide utmost service to their guests by exemplifying the adage of their brand founder Mr. J. W. Marriott, “If you take care of your associates, they will take care of the customer, and the customer will keep coming back.” And for one day each year, the company celebrates in thanksgiving for all the hard work and commitment that its hosts provide to make Marriott Hotel Manila as successful as it is today.

Modern-Day Heroes

Today is National Heroes Day here in the country. It is also the day of protest against PDAF (Priority Development Assistant Fund), also known as pork barrel. Dubbed as a Million People March, people trooped to Luneta park to cry to abolish pork barrel. The protest is fueled by the pork barrel scam, where it was found out that some senators and congressmen have allegedly been squandering their PDAF.

These lawmakers made us believe that  they are using the PDAF in legitimate ways only to find out that they are actually donating it to NGOs they themselves own or to fake NGOs. You know of course what this means.

If you were one of those who support this march, I salute you. It is high time that we paid attention to how our public funds were being used.

PDAF in principle is good. After all, the funds were intended to support development projects in the provinces. We should have started being wary about it when we knew that these funds are not subject to audit. Or better yet, when PDAF was started to be called pork barrel, which in technical terms refers to legislative control of local appropriations.

How did PDAF or pork barrel came about? I thought it started with the Marcos regime. But little research told me that it started during Cory Aguino’s leadership. It started out as country development fund (CDF). Read more about its evolution HERE.

Call it apropos that today, National Heroes is also the day of protest. It has become even more relevant because who are considered victims of this Pork Barrel Scam are the modern-day heroes.

Who are the modern-day heroes?

  • Folks who work hard to earn a living and apportion a huge part of their earnings to the government through taxation.
  • Folks who are helping run the economy by spending.
  • Folks who leave homes and families to earn a living overseas and invest/spend their earnings here in the country.
  • Folks who work for a real cause, or supporting a legit advocacy.
  • Folks who work for the improvement of the lives of the majority without the photo opps and publicity.
  • Folks who inspire others to do good.
Who are your modern-day heroes?
