What’s in a Name?
January 31st, 2009

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, Shakespeare went.
Can we apply this to street names? Can we say, a street by any other name would be as useful? I think so.
I’m talking about street names, because I stumbled upon an article on Fox News.
The article talks about Birmingham’s move to drop apostrophes from all its street signs, saying they’re confusing and old-fashioned. I find it interesting for people to be conscious about applying correct punctuation to street names or street signs.
Here in the country, we don’t bother about punctuation. We change the name of the street altogether, and often on a whim.
