The first time I set foot in Meralco Theater was when I was in college. It was my first real experience of a ballet show and my first real theater experience. Being a provincial lass, I was mesmerized.
Soon after, I’ve had several wonderful theater experiences at the Meralco. The last show I watched there was The Little Mermaid. This was the show where KC Conception was alternating with Carol Banawa. We saw the one with Carol Banawa. I became a fan of hers after that.
Every theater experience at Meralco Theater was always memorable. Little did I know that the theater is only a few months older than me.
Today, Meralco Theater turns 40. Yes, 40 years later, Meralco Theater is still an important edifice, a famous landmark in Metro Manila.
If I may quote Paulo Alcazaren in his column at Philippine Star:
The Meralco Theater by Jose Maria Zaragosa was inaugurated on March 22, 1969. The theater forms part of the larger Meralco Building, which was completed a little earlier. The 14-story building, theater and adjoining buildings form a landmark in the Ortigas district. Its elegant silhouette remains uncompromised mainly due to the fact that the posh Corinthian Gardens’ low suburban spread surrounds it.
…
The Meralco Theater was and still is one of the most modern and fully equipped theaters in the country. It seats a thousand, half the capacity of the CCP, but arguably with better acoustics. My old professor and former dean of the UP College of Architecture, Aurelio Jugillon, was the acoustic designer and he used the theater as an example of good acoustics.
